The domestic violence case against a policeman, D.Z., concerning his wife was dropped recently by Orange County prosecutors. The incident allegedly occurred in late September last year when his wife told another officer that her husband had made threats against her. She reportedly communicated to that officer that she feared for her life. The officer reported the incident concerning D.Z. to authorities who passed on the information to the Orange County Sheriff's Department for investigation. Upon arriving to his station that day, D.Z. was disarmed by his superiors and informed of the accusations. The investigation led to charges being filed by the OC District Attorney's Office and the 45-year-old officer was taken into custody. D.Z. was charged with felony criminal threats. Prosecutors on the case requested that the judge deny bail since the officer had access to firearms and may be a serious threat to the safety of his wife. D.Z.'s defense attorney filed for a dismissal which was granted after the man's wife would not cooperate with the prosecution. Had the case gone through to a conviction, D.Z. could have received a sentence of up to three years in prison plus fines and possible mandatory counseling.
Domestic violence cases can be very complex and emotionally heated so it is crucial that you enlist the help of a divorce lawyer you can trust to handle such issues. Domestic violence or abuse is not gender specific in the eyes of the law and victims can be male or female. What may start as just mild verbal threats and bouts of anger can escalate into serious assault and battery incidents. If you are concerned about your safety and the safety of your children in the presence of your spouse then you should seek legal protection immediately.
