The New York Times reported earlier this month that the California Supreme Court denied a request by backers of Proposition 8, which is a proposition that bans gay marriages in the state. The Prop 8 backers had asked for an emergency order to keep the proposition enforced while they continued their legal campaign to perpetuate the ban. The Court, however, refused to order an immediate stop to the issuance of marriage licenses in the state to gay and lesbian couples.
In England, a gay marriage law was approved by Parliament this month. The law would apply to England and Wales. It was supported by England's Prime Minister and was approved by the lower house after changes were made to it. After clearing Parliament, the law was sent to Queen Elizabeth II who gave it her stamp of approval as well.
Currently, same-sex marriage is not legal in the state of Nevada though the state does provide domestic partnerships to gay and lesbian couples. In Nevada, a domestic partnership is defined as a civil contract between the two people which grants them the same rights, protections, benefits, responsibilities, obligations, and duties as those involved in any other civil contract. Those who wish to establish a domestic partnership are required to file a notarized application with the state and pay the required fee.
