With the holiday season again upon us, parents who are divorced can run into complications regarding scheduling holiday visits. Additionally, things may have changed in one or both partner's lives since the previous holiday season and it is possible that you may need to create a modification of custody. Following are some helpful tips for making the holidays run a bit more smoothly as regards holiday visits with your children.
- Make arrangements for holiday visitation time in advance with your former spouse so things can be planned ahead of time and confusions can be avoided.
- Get your children's input as well regarding visitation time if they are old enough to have some of their own plans so things can be coordinated.
- Avoid getting into a competition with your ex as regarding gifts. You cannot buy a child's love with gifts and should not use this as a method of getting your child or children to favor you over your former spouse.
- If you or your former spouse's living situation has changed and you need to make arrangements to accommodate any changes that affect child custody, do consult with an experienced family law attorney and get them changed legally.
