Benefits of Having Joint Child Custody

Studies have been done on the subject of differences between having sole custody or of children in the event of divorce. The majority of studies favor joint
child custody; children proved to have more stability when influenced by both parents on a regular basis.
A Few Results from Studies
One study done (Glover, R. and C. Steele, "Comparing the Effects on the Child of Post-Divorce Parenting Arrangements," published in the Journal of Divorce, Vol 12, 1989) concluded that misbehavior and acting up was more common in sole custody cases. Fewer behavioral problems were manifest in children with joint custody arrangements; it was also determined that parents who had low self-esteem regardless of custody arrangement were more likely to have children with behavioral adjustment problems.
Another study done on 90 children ages 7 to 12 showed negative results for sole custody. Children in the study who were under sole custody had greater self-hate and perceived more rejection from fathers than those subjects under joint custody and spent time with both parents. Source: "Research on Shared parenting and Joint Custody." (Online published study).
Many other studies have been done on the subject of joint custody but it does appear that exposure to both parents is in general more beneficial to the child. There are always exceptions as in the case of where one parent is involved in drug, alcohol or some other form of abuse that could bring harm to the child.
