Increase In Domestic Violence Calls Linked to Rise in Unemployment

By Calvo & Calvo  Sep. 12, 2011 5:45p

In certain parts of Florida, as unemployment rates have increased, so too have the number of domestic violence calls. This correlation is not particularly surprising - when financial stress increases, so does the stress on the entire family. Many families are experiencing situations where one or both parents have lost their jobs and have had to join the ranks of the unemployed. Although this is not necessarily the direct cause of domestic violence, it most certainly aggravates any already existing instability in the family and sets the scene for violence and abuse to occur.

The Hotlines Tell the Story

Individuals who have made calls to hotlines have communicated how their economic situations have made their situations at home more dangerous and upsetting. Shayne Jones, an assistant criminology professor at the University of South Florida, has used statistical tests for the Sun Sentinel to examine the relationship between the increasing unemployment rate and the increase in domestic violence calls into the centers. There is a correlation, he concluded.

Stories have come through hotlines, for example, where people have had to resort to selling off personal items and even their children's toys in some instances to help make ends meet. When stress leads to the point where family members are being abused and in fear for their safety, it is time to take action. Failing to do so can result in tragedy.

Are you a victim of domestic violence in Fort Myers?

Under Florida law, domestic violence is defined as any assault (a threat or attempt to do bodily harm), including sexual assault or battery, kidnapping, stalking or false imprisonment. Domestic violence applies to any type of criminal offense which results in physical injury or the death of a family or household member, committed by another member in that household or family.

If you or someone you love is being victimized by domestic violence, you should consult with a Fort Myers family law attorney immediately. You have rights under Florida law and should take action without delay. Reports to law enforcement should be made and any documentation of the abuse gathered so it can be used as evidence if necessary. At Calvo & Calvo, Attorneys at Law, we focus on family law matters and can help. We can seek an order of protection for you and any other family members that may be endangered. This can greatly increase your level of protection and if need be, prevent the abuser from having any direct contact with you or the family.
