State Considering Changes to Child Custody Laws

Child custody can be tricky for parents that cannot agree on who gets primary custody. While each state usually has its own method for determining child custody, one state is re-working its current laws. Under the new "formula," child custody could change considerably for divorcing parents. In normal cases, a parent that is deemed to be "safe" and mentally fit will be given 25% time with the child. That leaves 50% of time for a judge to distribute. If Senate File 1402 passes, each parent will be given 40% and the remaining 20% will be decided by a judge. This change has been the result of many years of petitioning by parents that want to spend more time with their children.

Unfortunately, news sources say that not everyone is happy with the proposed changes. There are some groups that say that some parents do not have the time or resources to have 40% custody of their children.
