Minnesota Department of Human Services Discovers Child Support Error

Each year states across the nation hold audits of agencies that handle child support claims. The Minnesota Department of Human Services found a serious error that could have affected thousands of families. According to the report released by the department earlier this month, one out of every 3 child support cases reviewed in the state were wrongly closed. This amounts to an estimated $24 million in support that did not go to families that were supposed to receive it. The chief operating officer stated that the 34.5% of families that had their cases closed early will have their cases reviewed, but it will take considerable time to tackle all of them.

The error first came to light when a mother came forward with her closed case. She became confused and worried when the county "zeroed out" her account, even though she was owed $38,000 from a non-custodial parent. Are you owed child support? If so, take the time to consult a family lawyer who can help you seek past due payments.
