Child Support Sweep Conducted in New Mexico

Fourteen agencies came together last week to conduct a four-hour bench warrant raid in New Mexico.

The raid was spearheaded by the Human Services Department in conjunction with the state police and a dozen additional agencies. With over 90 bench warrants in hand, the officers took to the streets to locate negligent parents. Four hours later, 28 warrants had been served, which led to $35,000 being collected in cash-only bonds. This is a big triumph for the department since these funds will go straight to the debts that are owed.

This raid was conducted as part of a statewide child support program started by the governor earlier this year. Anyone arrested during one of these sweeps can only be released from jail by paying the full amount of owed child support in cash. The raid targeted parents in Sandoval, Bernalillo and Valencia counties, where $2.858 million was owed in child support payments.
