Illinois Considers Collecting Gambling Winnings of Parents who Fail to Pay

What could be new legislation in Illinois is old news for several states that have already enacted similar laws.

In an attempt to collect child support from negligent parents, some states have created laws that allow officials to collect gambling winnings from negligent parents. In these states, casinos are supposed to run a quick background check on someone before handing out their winnings. Those that are listed in the state's database of negligent parents have their winnings confiscated, but only up to the amount that they owe.

Now the Illinois state child support agency is lobbying state legislators to enact similar laws. One local newspaper reported that if the system were to be enacted in Illinois, the state could collect as much as $3 million per year, at a very low cost. These winnings would go directly to the parents who have been waiting for them.
