Although many people are uncomfortable discussing a prenuptial agreement before their wedding, it is vital to talk about this important document if you feel it will benefit your personal situation.
In fact, more and more people are opting for a prenup, citing the poor economy as a deciding factor in doing so. A survey released this year by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers shows that 73 percent of member lawyers have seen an increase in prenups over the past five years. Of these, 52 percent were women requesting a prenup, and 36 percent were those who wanted to protect pension and retirement benefits.
In essence, a prenup simply discusses how you want your property to be divided should a divorce or death happen in the future. Other circumstances that commonly call for a prenup are couples who have children, especially those from previous marriages; complicated investments and other financial agreements; and couples who have a business together.
Although it can be uncomfortable discussing a prenuptial agreement with your partner, it could make a serious difference in your future together. Consult with a family law attorney now to learn more about your legal options.
