What is Permanent Alimony?

If you are considering divorce then you might also be curious about permanent alimony.

Under the broadest definition of "permanent alimony," one person will pay the other person until either their death or remarriage of the recipient. However, even remarriage does not necessarily stop alimony payments either. Should you ask for permanent spousal support then you should ask your partner to get a life insurance policy if they don't already have one, and list you as the beneficiary. In the case of his/her death you will not lose your spousal support payments.

Although permanent spousal support is just that, permanent, the payments themselves can be altered over the course of time. One of the parties can request to have them increased or decreased based on a change in circumstance. For example, if one of the parties gets a job with a higher salary then the person paying support could request to have it lowered. The same can be said if the recipient loses a job and needs more spousal support in the future.
