Children in Illinois Owed $3 Billion in Child Support

The state of Illinois is worried about its children that are not receiving nearly $3 billion in child support. In fact, that figure has been the same for the past three years. It has only been able to take in about 58 percent of the child support it is owed and is quickly losing ground with the payments is does receive.
Yet it isn't the only state that is facing collection problems. Many others have reported that the recession is the primary factor to blame for a decline in child support payments. Parents who have little to no income simply don't have the means to make their payments and are even being jailed for their delinquency. Other factors to blame are deadbeat parents and unrealistic support orders.
A report released last year by a senior fellow at the Urban Institute, Elaine Sorenson, revealed that three years ago 625,000 children across the country would have been poor if not for their child support payments. In addition, one million people were saved from poverty by receiving payments.
