Are You Eligible for Alimony?

When you are considering a divorce you may also be wondering whether you are eligible for alimony.
While it depends on your current financial circumstances and the state in which you reside, there are several factors that will determine whether you are eligible to receive spousal support. These include, but are not limited to the ability of one spouse to pay, the duration of the marriage as well as the earning ability of the other spouse.
For example, if both spouses work, have comparable incomes and pension plans, and the marriage lasted for a long time, spousal support will most likely not be granted. However, if you were a stay-at-home mom, have no pension plan in your name and have no skills to make you an eligible candidate in the job market, you are more likely to be granted child support. Marriages of ten years or more are usually considered "long-term" marriages.
If you have questions about alimony, it is advised that you hire a family law attorney who can answer your questions.
