A trial date has been set for August 30 in one of the most highly publicized divorce cases of the last few years.
The trial is being held to determine ownership of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team. On one side is current Dodgers' owner Frank McCourt, who says a 2004 marital agreement awards him sole possession of the major league baseball club. On the other side is Jamie McCourt, Frank's estranged wife and former CEO of the team, who wants to remain a co-owner of the team.
The same marital agreement also awards Dodger stadium and the surrounding land to Frank, while Jamie gets to keep the couple's seven residences, which includes one condominium and six houses.
When a valuable property is at stake, it's important to hire a divorce attorney to protect your best interest by advocating your right to that property. Because California is a community property state, all property acquired during the marriage will be divided in an equitable manner. This means that if you and your spouse cannot agree on how to split your community property, the judge will decide for you in a decision based on what is fair considering the couple's circumstances both during the marriage and at the time the divorce petition was filed.
If you have decided to file for divorce and are concerned about how the divorce will affect your property, it's best consult a knowledgeable and experienced divorce lawyer. To find an attorney in your area, click here to search our family law attorney directory.
