Officials Say Domestic Violence is Epidemic in Maine

Law enforcement officials in Maine are starting to get worried about what seems to be an epidemic of domestic violence.
In just the past two weeks alone, there have been six domestic violence deaths. The deaths began two weeks ago in Winslow where a husband shot his own wife in front of their two children, and then ran away from their home before shooting himself. Just a few days later another father in Dexter shot his family before pointing the gun at himself.
According to Lois Galgay Reckitt, a victims advocate, it seemed that everyone in the community had been working to protect the Winslow victim, Amy Lake, from her husband. Reckitt cannot understand how this tragedy happened despite public awareness about her situation, with friends and coworkers constantly checking in on Lake.
Police officers are now being accompanied by a Family Crisis Services advocate each time they are called to a domestic violence situation.
If you'd like to put an end to domestic abuse, it is important that you enlist the help of a family lawyer near you.
