Another sports star is in trouble this week, this time it is Trevor Mbakwe of the Saint Paul Gophers. The basketball player pleaded not guilty of violating a restraining order at the Ramsey County Courthouse last week.
Although the pre-trial hearing is set for Feb. 7, a prosecutor has already been granted a request for an additional criminal no-contact order that prevents Mbakwe from having any sort of contact with his ex-girlfriend. He was taken into custody on Jan. 10 when he posted a Facebook message on her account. This led to a misdemeanor charge that could cost him $1000 in fines and up to 90 days in jail.
Restraining orders now include text messages and online communications as violations of a "no-contact" order.
His girlfriend was given the restraining order back in June 2009 when she told the judge that Mbakwe continued to call her repeatedly, even after they had broken up. She also brought to light his previous felony battery charge that is pending in Miami as a reason why he might harm her in the future. Although the battery charge has now been dismissed the restraining order will be in effect until August of this year.
