Same-Sex Marriage in California

For two years, same-sex couples in California were able to obtain legal marriages. From June 2008 until November 2010, a new law removed certain language from the state's constitution which allowed same-sex couples to get married.
During that time, nearly 18,000 same sex couples were married in the state. In 2010, a new law was passed, Proposition 8, which overturned the decision of 2008 to allow same sex marriage. Since then, many groups have been working together to get Proposition 8 overturned.
Although it has yet to occur, the state legislature did agree to recognize the existing marriages of same-sex couples. Time will tell if the state's legislators will once again agree to allow same sex couples to obtain legal marriages in California.
