70% of Eligible Children Receiving Child Support in Michigan

A new report issued by the Department of Human Services in Michigan revealed that 70 percent of children who are eligible for child support in the state are actually receiving it.

Marilyn Stephen, director of the Child Support division of the department, commented that, "I don't know that I'd categorize it as either good or bad." While 70 percent represents a large chunk of children who are lucky enough to be getting the support they need, that still leaves hundreds of families without the funds they deserve. The agency spends about 90 percent of their efforts attempting to locate and enforce payments for the thirty percent who are not receiving them.

The report went on to show that most parents do want to make their payments on time, even though times are tough and jobs are scarce. Stephens hopes that lawmakers will look at the positive aspects of this report, such as the fact that for every dollar of taxpayer money spent, six dollars of child support is collected.
