A new study conducted by author, Authur Aron, and several researchers at Stony Brook Institute suggests that marriages end in divorce when "self expansion" does not occur. According to the author, self expansion occurs when a relationship adds value, excitement and interest in a married person's life.
During the study, one group of couples was asked to perform a series of monotonous tasks together. The other group of couples was asked to perform exercises that were silly, but fun. While performing the exercising, both groups were asked to rate their relationship satisfaction.
The study found that those who had performed the silly exercises rated their satisfaction much higher than those who had to perform monotonous tasks. Aron also insists that factors that commonly contribute to divorce are criticism, defensiveness, contempt and also stonewalling.
