Wisconsin Upholds Same-Sex Marriage Ban

The Wisconsin Supreme Court has upheld the state constitution's ban on same-sex marriage and civil unions. The court ruled unanimously on the matter and that the 2006 amendment that banned both types of unions was properly put to voters in a ballot referendum. This decision was made because a lawsuit was filed against the state claiming that the referendum violated the state constitution because it addressed more than one subject and asked voters to decide two questions instead of one. In Wisconsin, same-sex couples can file to receive about 40 of the 150 legal benefits of marriage.
