Program Aims to Help Parents Get Back on Track with Child Support

California is giving parents whose driver's licenses have been suspended for failing to make  child support payments the chance to get their driving privileges back.

The "Get Back on the Road Again" program allows parents to have their driver's licenses reinstated if they take the appropriate corrective steps.

First, they must pay at least one month's child support. Next, they must put a minimum of $25 towards arrears (unpaid child support), and lastly, they must provide information about their current employment status.

Under normal circumstances, parents have to be current on all child support payments, with no arrears, before their licenses will be reinstated.

The program was designed by Iliana Rodriguez, director of Child Support Services for San Mateo County. Rodriguez came up with the idea as way to motivate parents to keep up with their child support payments. As this year's president of the California Child Support Directors Association, Rodriguez felt the program could be effective on a state-wide level.

The program, which runs through the entire month of August, is intended to help those parents who are struggling financially due to the recession and poor economy.
