New York Governor Cuomo recently announced new legislation that would greatly increase the penalties repeat offenders of domestic violence could be facing. If the bill goes through, an individual with a prior misdemeanor on his or her criminal record would receive harsh felony charges. The potential law is an effort to help protect families from harm or further harm and includes other aspects in regard to protection for victims of domestic abuse or violence. The law would specify that an individual that had been convicted of a misdemeanor domestic violence charge within five years of a second incident would then be charged with a felony. Penalties for felony domestic violence include up to four years imprisonment. If you or a loved one has been the victim of domestic violence in the county of Queens, Nassau, or Suffolk or the surrounding communities then talk to a Long Island divorce attorney that is knowledgeable in handling such cases.
