L.H. and her husband say they have been happily married and living apart for most of their marriage. They have been married for seven years, have a five-year-old daughter together and live about four blocks away from each other. She describes the situation as being like a “very functional divorced couple” because they live apart but are on good terms. They are not separated or seeking a legal separation, they just seem to enjoy the arrangement. L.H.’s husband comes over every week night for dinner and the three spend a lot of time together with their daughter. Other times their daughter is with their mother only but sometimes spends time with just her father. She explained that the arrangement came about not long after they got married and had moved into together. She brought all her belongings to his home and then they apparently realized that the situation was cramping their style. The solution that worked for this couple was to have separate places near each other. Consult with a divorce lawyer today if you have questions about a family law matter.
Experts Say More Couples are Choosing to be “Live Apart-ners”
With a current divorce rate nearing 50% experts such as marriage and family therapists say they understand why so many couples may be embracing this idea which is being termed “live apart-ners”. According to the United States Census Bureau, there may be as many as 1.7 million married couples that prefer to live apart rather than get a legal separation or a divorce—or indeed, to prevent a divorce. It can be a costly way to live but is worth it to those who swear by the arrangement. One couple explained that it made it feel like they had all the benefits of marriage while keeping the relationship as fun as dating. The danger remains, however, that living apart could lead to growing apart emotionally. If the couple does decide to divorce, the process may be a lot less painful and complicated since the two were basically living divided lives already in terms of property.
