As Economy Improves, So Does Divorce Rate

Families Put Off Divorce In Troubled Times
Lawyers and experts have linked the state of the U.S. economy to the rate of divorce, with a series of studies showing couples waiting to take action until their finances improve.
Statistics released by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers shows the chilling effect put on divorce rates due to the recent economic troubles. The numbers in the AAML reports indicate that in 2008, the rate of divorce dropped by 24 percent. As the recession continued in 2009, the rate continued to plummet, falling by as much as 57 percent that year.
“People were afraid they were going to lose their jobs,” reported Lea Viken, president of the AAML, “so they were very cautious about getting a divorce because you have to split your assets.”
Fortunately for the practice of divorce attorneys, however, the numbers began to creep back up in 2010, Viken said.
"It's starting to improve. It's pretty obvious by talking to people.”
Divorce And Marriage Related To Economy
Lawyers specializing in matrimonial law said that it was not only divorce that was linked to the economy. While the number of divorces demonstrably decreased due to financial difficulties, so did the rate of marriages and childbirths.
A poll conducted by the University of Virginia found that as many of 38 percent of couples considering divorce had chosen to wait until the economy improved before filing legal papers. This effect was also found to affect marriage rates, as a report by the Pew Research Center showed. In 2009, Pew discovered that 15 percent of adults aged 18-35 had decided to wait to get married during the recession, and 14 percent had put off having children.
