A Columbia father was arrested recently after his young son called police. R.B., 29 years old, is accused of domestic violence offenses against his wife. The incident happened when R.B. and his wife reportedly got into an argument at home. The fight allegedly escalated and he hit his wife several times. The couple's son says he witnessed his father hit his mom and went next door to a neighbor's house for help. The boy called 911 from the neighbor's home and told the operator what he saw. County sheriff's deputies arrived at the family's home and R.B. was taken into custody on suspicion of assaulting his wife. Reports did not say what the wife's condition was or if there was further evidence concerning the assault but R.B. has been charged with criminal domestic violence. Domestic violence issues can be complex and emotionally stressful. Make sure you have the help of a divorce attorney well-versed in handling domestic violence cases so your legal rights are protected.
The state of Maryland defines a domestic violence case as any involving violence or abuse involving spouses, former spouses, significant others, ex-boyfriend or ex girlfriend, parents and children, siblings or members of a household. Such situation may arise during a divorce, child custody battle or a breakup. It is crucial that you know your legal options in these difficult situations so you can ensure your own safety and the safety of your children. A family lawyer may be able to obtain a peace order or order of protection (also known as a "restraining order") on your behalf. A restraining order prohibits an individual who has displayed violent, abusive or harassing behavior towards you from contacting you or coming within a certain distance of you, your home, workplace and other such locations. If the incident concerns a spouse then once you have a protective order in place you may wish to pursue a divorce and/or sole custody of your children. A legal professional can assist you in sorting out all of these matters.
