As reported in The Chicago Tribune News, a 53-year-old woman is now receiving back child support payments that her ex-husband has owed her for decades. The Illinois woman, L. A. E., used a collection agency that specializes in child support to track her ex-husband down for the support payments he failed to make for their daughter. The couple were married very young, had an infant, and the husband left when the child was only 13 months old. He stopped paying child support after their divorce was finalized, leaving the woman to work two jobs for many years to support herself and daughter. Her daughter is now 33 years old.
Court records in the case show that the ex-husband, R. H., has agreed to pay $20,000 in child support arrears. The support payments are made through a wage garnishment in which he pays $175 to L. A. E. and another $900 in support payments for two children by another woman. Next year when his support payments end for the other children, his back payments for his daughter by L. A. E. will be raised to $500 per month by the court. L. A. E. easily found her ex-husband through the collection agency because she remembered his Social Security number. She must pay the collection company, however, for their services which totals 30 percent of the revenue it brings in from her ex-husband.

The above is an example of how a child support order may be enforced through legal action. After a divorce has been finalized and court orders are in place, they sometimes need to be enforced. These enforcements of orders may pertain to child support, spousal support, or child custody and visitation. If you are an aggrieved ex-spouse or parent who needs legal advice, guidance, or representation in getting court orders complied with, you should seek the legal counsel of an experienced family lawyer in your area.
