The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported that 70,120 marriages took place in the state in 2012 while 36,345 divorces or annulments were completed. Compare this to 1950 statistics where 89,669 marriages occurred with only 12,096 divorces or annulments. As evidenced by these statistics, marriages are down and divorces are significantly higher. According to further statistics from this state agency, marriages of a duration of 5 to 9 years had the highest percentage of divorces at close to 25 percent. Marriages that lasted under 5 years had the next highest divorce percentage at 21.6 percent. The percentage of divorce gradiently reduces the longer a marriage lasts beyond 9 years.
The organization divorcerate.org states that the highest divorce rate in the world is in Russia at 5 per 1,000 people. The United States was rated 6th in the world by this organization with a divorce rate of 3.4 per 1,000 people. It further states that both men and women who marry at 20 to 24 years of age have the highest rate of divorce. For women this rate stands at 36.6 percent while for men it stands at 38.8 percent. The divorce rate continues to rise upon second and third marriages in this country. For first marriages, the rate is 50 percent. For second marriages, it increases to 67 percent while for third marriages it goes up to 74 percent. Childlessness seems to be a factor in many divorces: 66 percent of all divorced couples have no children. According to mainstreet.com, Pennsylvania has the 6th lowest divorce rate at 9.2 percent in the United States.
