City Announces Domestic Partnership Registry

Another city has made headlines by formalizing a domestic partnership registry. Dayton City joins hundreds of other towns and municipalities that have decided to extend legal rights to domestic partnerships for both straight and homosexual couples. Although these partnerships will not be recognized as marriages, couples that sign up for the registry will be given more legal rights. One of the most important benefits of such a registry is extending benefits to the partners of city employees who have previously been denied coverage. In addition, partners will now have the ability to visit their loved ones in the hospital and pick up children from school.

Legal rights like these have previously been reserved solely for those couples that are married. Before the commission voted on the issue, nearly a dozen people came out to speak in support of the change. Many of them spoke about the difficulties of obtaining insurance despite being in a committed relationship with their partners, whether straight or homosexual. If you want to learn more about the domestic partnership laws in your state, consult a family lawyer as soon as possible.
