Child Obesity May Impact Parents' Custody

Childhood obesity is on the rise and officials are working to control it. This is being done in a variety ways, one of which is removing obese children from their parents.

One such child was placed in a foster home last week to the shock and dismay of his mother. The 8-year-old boy weighs 200 pounds and already has serious health problems. When social workers learned about the young boy, they worked to remove him from his home. He is now being held at a foster home until a plan can be developed with the mother.

This case has started a debate that has been long in the making. Some people believe that children like this should be removed from their homes. Since it is the parents' responsibility to take care of their children, including their nutrition and well-being, this can easily be seen as poor and even dangerous parenting. Others believe that the state cannot claim child custody even when a child is morbidly obese.

If you are going through a tough child custody case, know that a family lawyer may be able to help you reach a resolution.
