State May Extend Length of Restraining Orders

In order to further protect victims of domestic violence, one state is working on legislation to extend the length of restraining orders. As it stands now, restraining orders in Connecticut can be granted for a maximum period of six months. Several groups are working to influence state legislators to get the new law enacted. A bipartisan group is working with the Speaker of the House to have the six months extended to one year. This recommendation went before the three-member Task Force on Domestic Violence, along with 19 other recommendations.

Another proposal put before the group was for bail commissioners to consider the type of crime committed before setting bail. This specific recommendation was made with C.F. in mind, a victim of domestic violence that was killed when her husband was released on $1000 bail. Is someone threatening the safety of your family? If so, now is the right time to discuss your case with a family law attorney. With a litigator on your side that understands family law you can take measures to protect yourself.
