Some employees of Allegheny County will be extended certain benefits previously denied to them. An executive order is set to be signed by the county executive, who is finally making good on a promise he made several years ago. The executive order will apply to gay and lesbian couples that are in committed relationships. If one or both of the individuals work for the county, they will be granted some of the same benefits that married couples enjoy.
In order to qualify, both people must be at least 18 years old and have been in a committed relationship for at least one year. Neither party can be married to someone else or in a committed relationships with someone else. Allegheny County will be the 187th municipality to extend same-sex benefits in the United States. Back in 2010, the county passed a law that made it illegal to discriminate against residents based on sexual orientation. Do you have questions about the domestic partnership laws in your state?
