Domestic violence is a serious problem that affects thousands of families. Incidences of domestic violence can include a combination of physical abuse and mental abuse that hurts not only the person whom the abuse is aimed at, but the entire family as well. Sometimes the person who is accused of domestic violence finds himself/herself confused by the charges.
There is no singular definition of domestic abuse. Depending on what state you reside in, you can be charged with domestic violence for a variety of situations, some of which may surprise you. If you have been arrested for domestic violence, however, you cannot take these charges lightly. It is important to seek legal counsel immediately to fight your charges in a court of law. When you are taken into custody, the police officer must tell you exactly what your charges are and give you the chance to speak with a lawyer. You will also be given one phone call, which most people use to call a
family lawyer or a bail bondsman.
