New Program Aims to Reduce Child Support Delinquency

One county's family court is attempting to reduce the number of unpaid child support cases this week with a new program. The initiative allows parents to speak with law enforcement officials without the fear of criminal penalties.
Any parents that have active bench warrants can visit the court during the amnesty week to speak with a judge about their current condition. They can discuss their employment status, current address and the option to modify their payment plans. The week of amnesty was applied four years ago, and according to the deputy administrator, it was met with much success. Local officials hope that more individuals will come in during the week to make payments and discuss future payments as well.
When the program was initiated four years ago, over 1,000 people came to the courts to discuss their child support payments. Officers collected $134,000 over the amnesty week, a figure they hope to improve upon this month.
