Florida Changes Domestic Partnership Laws and Rights

Big changes are being made in Florida this year towards domestic partnership rights. Based on new legislation that is being sponsored by the state senator, those in domestic partnerships may soon be able to add their names to a new registry that will be recognized by the state.

The legislation, entitled Senate Bill 166, will be heard in January 2012, but the senator is already stumping for its approval. If passed, the bill will allow those in domestic partnerships, both straight and gay, to be acknowledged legally in the state. Additionally, the term "partnership" will be added to state forms as another relationship status option.

While those in the LGBT community are thrilled about the possibility of this new legislation, they agree that there is still much to do before the community is recognized completely in Florida. The state senator has long been seen as an ally to the LGBT community.

If you have questions concerning your domestic partnership, it is important that you take the time to speak with a family lawyer immediately.
