Domestic Violence Offenders Face Bail Restrictions

A new state law is being proposed that would place more severe bail restrictions on violators of domestic violence-related restraining orders. Supporters of the legislation say that the new law would help better protect victims from their attackers.
Under the proposed law, violators of domestic violence-related restraining orders would be required to post their entire bail before being released. Alternatively offenders could secure a bond via real property equal to the amount of bail plus an additional $20,000.
Currently, domestic violence restraining order violators can post as little as 10% of their bail and be released. In some cases this amounts to as little as $50. People who support the proposed law claim that at just $50, there's not much incentive for restraining order violators to abide by the courts. People in favor of the law also cite statistics that show a global rise in domestic violence.
Legislators are hoping to shed more light on the issue and bring better protection to victims of domestic violence. It is currently estimated that one in four women will be a victim of domestic violence in her lifetime. This proposed law hopes to improve those numbers.
