Domestic Partnership Laws in California

If you are currently involved in a domestic partnership in California, there are three laws that you should be familiar with.
The first is the Equality and Equal Access in Higher Education Act. It ensures that college and university campuses, as well as community colleges, have policies in place to protect students that are part of the LGBT community. A university board must be established to regulate and enforce these policies, and a contact person must be listed for any questions that students have regarding LGBT issues on campus.
When the second act was based, the Domestic Partnership Equality Act, domestic partners in California were given many more freedoms. It corrected nine inequalities between domestic partnerships and heterosexual marriages, including the ability of domestic partners to share health benefits and that domestic partners must live together before getting married. And finally, the Protection of Parent-Child Relationships Act gives more legal rights to domestic partners who want to adopt a child in the state of California.
