States across the country are fighting to obtain child support from negligent parents. One of them, New Mexico, is working overtime to locate parents that are grossly negligent in making payments. These parents not only face the threat of having to pay thousands of dollars' worth of child support, but also jail time.
The head of the Child Support Enforcement Agency in New Mexico spoke about the problem last week, saying that parents have stopped paying for a variety of reasons ranging from inability to pay to the lack of desire to pay. In total, 26,000 parents currently owe $680 million in child support. The agency has created a special task force that is going out and pounding the pavement in search of child support offenders.
Earlier this month, the group went to a home in the Northeast Heights multiple times to try and track down one man. He is allegedly several years behind on payments and owes $122,000.
Are you owed child support payments? If so, speak with a family law attorney about your options so you can collect past-due payments.
