According to a new report released by Attorney General Roy Cooper, the number of domestic violence-related deaths in the state increased in 2010.
In 2010 there were a reported 107 domestic violence deaths, compared to 99 in 2009. Of these, seventy victims were women and 11 of the offenders were women as well. In a follow-up news released, Cooper said "Domestic violence is a dangerous crime and can lead to deadly results [...] North Carolina has to work to get victims the help they need and to stop early signs of violence before people are seriously hurt and killed."
The state's domestic violence statistics actually ran counter to those reported for the rest of the country where a 7.1 percent drop was seen. Although the results for murder cases has not yet been released, experts estimate that domestic violence could account for at least one-fifth of all murders in the state.
