The Consequences of Parental Alienation

Parental alienation is an ugly phenomenon that can raise its head during difficult times, especially divorce.
While there is no exact definition of parental definition, it can be observed in several common ways. For example, parents who engage in "he said/she said" tactics in an attempt to divide their child's loyalty are considered to be inflicting parental alienation. Children who become brainwashed enough will start to tell stories about how the offending parent "hurt" them, even if no abuse actually occurred. When the targeted parent attempts to fight back, the child is placed in an even more difficult position, trying to determine what is right and wrong.
This can lead to an altered perception of reality, breaking down the sense of self for the child. In serious examples of parental alienation, friends and family are cut out of the child's life, especially those who could have had a positive influence on the child.
If you'd like to combat parental alienation, it is advised that you hire a
family law attorney who can protect your rights as a parent.
