Domestic Partners Offered Support in Milwaukee

Departing from the former County Executive's decisions, Chris Abele has announced his support of extending benefits to domestic partners in the county.

Back in 2009, then CE Scott Walker not only vetoed a measure to examine the effects of granting benefits to domestic partners of county employees, but he also refused to accept the domestic partnership law going into effect. Walker turned down these measures despite having strong support in favor of them. Now Abele is stepping in where Walker failed, to push for domestic partnerships being given the same benefits as traditional marriages.

These benefits would be extended to unmarried partnerships - of the same or opposite sex - who live together. Abele added that, "To continue ofering one category of employees fewer benefits than others is unfair and it makes it difficult to attract the best possible job candidates."

If you are part of a domestic partnership and you have questions about your rights, it is advised that you consult with a family lawyer.
