Another child support offender went to court this week to discuss the $100,000 that he owes in back child support payments.
Roland R. Baldwin, III, 42, was given three years probation as well as the warning that he could go to prison for up to one year if he does not stick to the terms of his probation. Baldwin, who has already spent time behind bars, told District Judge Dave Gamble that he is "trying my best to rectify this situation," adding that "I dug myself into a hole. I spent 20 days in jail, and I never want to see the inside of a cell again."
Since he pleaded guilty to attempted failure to support or maintain a child, Judge Gamble treated the charge as a misdemeanor. However, she did voice her displeasure at the situation by commenting that "It's astonishing to me that someone can be so offended or astonished at their divorce that it comes to this criminal situation. He's been anything but cooperative."
Back in 2003 he was ordered to pay $1,116 per month for his two children; he now owes $98,255.88 in arrears as of September 2010.
