Getting Alimony Payments

Are you in the process of getting a divorce? If so, your attorney is likely to ask if you want to ask for alimony. This is not an easy process as there are six different types of alimony that you could request.

The six basic types of alimony are temporary, bridge-the-gap, rehabilitative, durational, permanent and lump-sum alimony. Depending on your current situation, including finances and length of marriage, you may be eligible for one, several or none of the above alimonies.

While judges in many states are becoming less likely to grant permanent alimony to divorcing couples, they are more likely to grant rehabilitative alimony. Depending on what state you file for divorce in you could be eligible for this type of spousal support. It is generally given in shorter marriages in which one partner needs temporary financial assistance. The party asking for the alimony must show that he/she will be seeking some sort of rehabilitation, such as attending college that will help support the individual later in life.

Have questions about what type of alimony you may be eligible for?  If so, it is in your best interests to speak with a family lawyer in your state.
