Even though the state of Missouri does not recognize domestic partnerships as being legal, a city within the state is making headlines by working towards changing social policy.
The city of Olivette announced that starting in September, the Domestic Partnership Registry Ordinance will be open to domestic partners. Those couples who are interested will be allowed to register as a domestic partners, which will not only let them be viewed legally as a couple, but to open up benefits that have previously been denied to them.
To sign up for the registry, the couple must be living together and vow to be concerned about each other's welfare. Each couple must prove that they are at least 18 years old and are not married to anyone else at that time. Those individuals who work for the city will be allowed to name their domestic partners on their health insurance plans, which will also let them qualify for paid sick leave.
Have questions about domestic partnerships and related benefits? If so, now is a good time to consult with a family lawyer in your city.
