Child Custody Laws Being Revisited

Across the country child custody laws are being revisited, such as in Alabama where a new bill is being reviewed this month.
If State Senate Bill 196 is passed through, both parents would automatically receive equal custody unless there is a history of abuse or neglect. State records show that in 85 percent of child custody cases in Alabama, the mother is awarded primary custody of the child. The bill goes on to say that, "There is a fundamental importance...in the relationship between a child and each parent," a fact that many legislators are hoping to enforce with the passage of this bill.
According to attorney Sharon Doviet, many fathers stand to benefit from this bill. Many of her clients are fathers who believe that, under the current legislature, they are being treated unfairly when it comes to determining child custody. However, Doviet added that this may be difficult to enforce in the courtroom as, "In reality, in most families, one parent or the other has been the primary caretaker of the child, and has been the one that's taken care of homework...It just organizes better that way if one person's in charge."
