Identifying Domestic Violence

Domestic violence does not always happen to whom you expect, and many suffering from domestic violence are experts at hiding their situation. If you suspect that a friend or family member is in a violent relationship, look for these signs:
If the batterer causes injuries resulting in visible bruises or cuts, the intent is generally to isolate their victim at home. In other cases, the batterer may be careful to avoid marking their victim. If a battered person has frequently visible injuries, they will often claim to be clumsy or cover themselves with elaborately told stories of how injuries were incurred.
If a person takes unexpected time off from work or school, frequently calls in sick, or is often late, it may be a sign that they are suffering abuse.
Many battered people exhibit low self-esteem, but some actually show a great deal of confidence in some area of their life, such as their work, as a mother, or with hobbies. These people, however, won't exhibit confidence in their relationship. Battered people often believe that they could not make it on their own without their partner, even that they are lucky to have him or her in their life.
