Wisconsin Families Struggle to Pay Child Support amidst Layoffs

In Eau Claire, Wisconsin, numerous families are reporting that layoffs throughout the county have made it extremely difficult for parents to make their child support payments.

The Eau Claire county child support agency recently stated that it has noticed a large increase in the number of parents who are requesting that their child support payments are reviewed because they have been laid off.  The agency also reports that it is dealing with a lot of cases where the parents work within the construction industry, an industry that has been hit pretty hard in terms of unemployment.   In the next couple of months, they anticipate the same will be true for parents who are working in retail.

Jan Steiner, the director for the Eau Claire child support center told news sources that when "a $1,200 a month child support order isn't being paid, it really has a dramatic effect on the family. Certainly it curbs their lifestyle, it effects the amount of money that they're putting back into the economy. That person probably had health insurance that covered his family and now that's not available, so the effects just go on and on and on."

During the winter months, it is very common for construction and retail industries to be hit by layoffs, but this past year the amount of laid off employees has increased significantly.  The agency claims that, aside from construction and retail workers, numerous other Wisconsin parents have come to them to report that they can no longer make their child support payments, and have asked for child support modifications.
