New York Legal Update Allows No-Fault Divorce For Couple

The recent divorce settlement granted to a New York couple is the least of the worries facing the husband, who has come under fire in an alleged extortion case.

The family had been attempting to get a divorce since 2005, when a jury ruled that they could not divorce, but instead required them to build a wall dividing their house in two. This state of affairs lasted until just this year, when a change in New York law allowing for no-fault divorces finally made their settlement possible. The couple was officially granted their divorce, but with the caveat that they must sell the walled home, along with two other properties in the couples possession, and split the proceeds.

Husband Faces Police Scrutiny

This decision is a boon to the husband and his lawyers, who can finally concentrate on the other legal cases coming his way. Last year, he was accused of attempting to extort money from the son of a convicted pederast, threatening to claim falsely that the son had committed sexual crimes against the husband’s family.

According to police investigating the incident, the son was approached in April 2010 and warned that unless he paid a $250,000 bribe, the husband would accuse him of sexually abusing a minor. The son immediately contacted the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, who set up a sting operation by recording phone calls between the two men in which they discussed payment of the bribe.

When the son made his first ‘installment’ of $75,000 to the husband, the police stepped in and arrested the suspect, charging him with several counts of attempted grand larceny.
