If you have come to the conclusion that divorce may be the best solution to your relationship, following is some advice you may find helpful prior to filing. Not understanding what some of the financial pitfalls are when considering a divorce can cause you both short and long term regret.
Some Helpful Tips on Financial Matters
First of all, you will want to take a look at some realistic estimates as to what additional expenses you may have to be responsible for if you get divorced. You will need to take a look at:
- What will my source(s) of income be?
- What will my monthly expenses be?
- Will my standard of living be affected and if so, how can I adjust to the change?
- Will I need to do any special training for additional work skills to support myself?
- Do I have a separate credit account that I can use? If not, you may want to establish credit for yourself.
Another important thing to do is to get yourself informed as much as possible as to exactly what your financial situation is with your spouse. Being informed as to what assets exist as well as liabilities in a marriage is vital and if you are involved in a divorce and haven't a clue as to what these are, things can get expensive to pay for investigative work. Bank statements, investment reports, retirement plans, insurance policies, credit cards, tax returns, mortgages, loans and so forth are all relevant to being educated as to what your financial situation actually is.
