Senator in Maryland Reconsidering Child Support Legislation

A senator in Maryland is having second thoughts about legislation that he endorsed. He wants to make an amendment to the legislation that could have an effect on child support in the state. The change would apply specifically to people that are incarcerated but have legal obligations to make child support payments. Senator R.Z. worked on a piece of legislation that would allow prisoners to put their child support payments on hold while they are incarcerated. After thinking about the law, Senator R.Z. now wants to amend it slightly.

Instead of automatically granting a stay on payments, he would prefer that jails tell prisoners that they have the option of getting a stay. Prisoners who apply for a waiver would have a stay put on their payments for their period of incarceration. Since they do not have the ability to make money, the senator argues, it would affect their payment history significantly in a way that they could not change. Do you have questions related to the child support laws in your state? If so, talk to a family lawyer as soon as possible.
