The Types of Child Support Cases

If you are considering child support, you need to understand the four different types of cases.

First is IV-D wherein the parent who is responsible for caring for the child receives financial support from the Office of Child Support Enforcement. Individuals who qualify for this type of support are actively searching for the biological spouse in order to pay child support. If necessary, the local police department can help determine paternity.

If a parent receives financial assistance from the state, this is known as an IV-A case. However, the state does not give the money freely. It will ask the Office of Child Support Enforcement to track down the negligent parent in order to recoup those funds.

An IV-E case is when the child is being supported by a foster family or a relative. Again, they will use the Office of Child Support Enforcement to locate the absent parents. And finally, a Non IV-D case is when child support is obtained privately.
